BYD Sealion 7 vs Tesla Model Y: Range, Charging and Space

Sealion 7 versus Model Y is a practical family EV decision, not a contest between two headline numbers. Compare the market and generation of each car, the same passenger and luggage task, and the charging access available to you. A Model Y update or overseas specification should not silently change the comparison with a different production-period Sealion.

Resolve four practical differences
QuestionCompare on this basis
RangeIdentified version and named test cycle; separate route assumptions
ChargingCompatible access, similar charging window and conditions
SpaceSame passengers and luggage with needed seats available
PriceDated equivalent offer with explicit equipment and exclusions

Fix the production version before comparing

Record original market, build period, battery version, drivetrain, wheel configuration and grade. Model Y has production and regional variations; identify the offered vehicle rather than assuming every listing matches the current manufacturer page. A China-market Sealion 07 EV also needs its own equipment evidence. Choose equivalent new or used candidates, or state the age and condition differences. Avoid combining an entry price, a premium-grade range and an AWD acceleration figure into a fictional vehicle.

Compare range without mixing test cycles

Use figures for matched versions and name the test cycle. Do not treat CLTC and WLTP as interchangeable or convert one into a guaranteed road result. For trip planning, use comparable speed, weather, passenger load and reserve assumptions. Wheel choice and condition may also change the practical result. A used vehicle needs independent battery and charging checks. If the actual battery is unidentified, a precise kilometre estimate gives false confidence; resolve that specification before making a route commitment.

Check charging access before charging speed

Confirm the vehicle connector, network access and payment arrangements at the destination. Do not assume every Tesla can use every regional station or that a particular network will accept an imported car. Compare a similar starting and ending state of charge under known conditions, including station capability and battery temperature. For regular overnight use, home AC access can matter more than a brief DC peak. For long trips, map usable stops and an alternative site before deciding which charging advantage you can exploit.

Use the same luggage test for boot space

Load the normal stroller and suitcases without sacrificing required passenger seats. Note the opening height, floor shape, underfloor compartments and any cover you need. Cargo figures can count different compartments or use different measurement methods; a single larger litre number is not a complete answer. Check rear headroom with the front seats correctly positioned and test permitted child-seat fitting. External photos on this page show the BYD archive vehicle, not a two-car comparison drive or a Model Y load test.

Compare the cost at the same delivery point

Use written quotations dated consistently and itemise vehicle price, preparation, equipment, transport and exclusions. A local retail price with tax and warranty cannot be substituted directly for an export vehicle-only quotation. Check destination insurance, tyre choices and service access separately. For used stock, repair history or battery findings may be more important than a small difference in asking price. Keep unknown charges marked as unknown rather than implying a complete landed figure.

Choose according to the demonstrated household fit

Select Model Y when its actual cabin, charging access, condition and support solve your priorities more convincingly. Prefer Sealion 7 when its verified features and overall offer meet the same requirements with fewer compromises. Try the controls, climate and parking views you will use daily; brand familiarity alone does not establish usability. Document essential equipment and account handover before ordering. Neither car is the better choice for every family or destination, and no brochure replaces inspection of an individual used vehicle.

What to request before ordering

  • Market, generation, battery, drivetrain and wheel-size identity.
  • Range figures on a named, comparable test basis.
  • Usable charging stations and comparable charging conditions.
  • Same luggage and seating trial plus equivalent total-cost scope.

Questions buyers ask

Can I compare CLTC with WLTP directly?

No. Keep the test cycles separate and use explicit route assumptions for practical planning.

Is the Model Y always cheaper?

No. Compare the actual offers at the same delivery point, with equivalent tax, equipment and support scope.

Does a bigger published cargo volume guarantee a better family fit?

No. Opening shape, seating needs and the way compartments are counted also matter.
